A572 plate is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel that includes five grades—42, 50, 55, 60, 65 and 80—according to their minimum specified yield strength. For applications requiring notch toughness.
Product Description
A572 plate is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel that includes five grades—42, 50, 55, 60, 65 and 80—according to their minimum specified yield strength. For applications requiring notch toughness.
Advantages/Disadvantages
A572 steel plate has good structural quality with an optimal combination of high strength, high notch toughness, good weldability, and high value. Due to its alloying elements, it can be a little more difficult to form and pre-testing of both welding and post-welding heat treatments is recommended.
Applications
A572 grades 50, 65, and 80 are seen widely in the Wind and Solar industries. As a structural steel plate, ASTM A572 grades are common in structural applications across a broad range of market segments.A572 is often used in construction equipment, bridges, buildings, machinery, freight cars, truck parts, and transmission towers. Because of its versatility, it is considered a “workhorse” grade and shows up in a huge range of products. A572 grades 50, 65, and 80 steel plate are frequently used in the wind industry where they are often used as base plates for wind turbines and can be custom roll formed to size and welded into wind towers.
Machining
A572 is an HSLA steel plate with fair machinability. It can be drilled, countersinked, counterbored, tapped, and milled with conventional equipment and carbide tools.
Welding
A572 steel plate is considered to have excellent weldability and can be weld by all conventional methods.
Heat Treatment
Heat treatment is not required for A572 steel plate. However, it is possible to require a higher level of strength by specifying quenched and tempered steel plates.
